Hi, I'm sure I'm not the first one to ask some of these questions so I apologize if I missed a thread or 6. I am headed to Vegas next month and I'm predominantly a sports bettor (NFL & NHL). However, I thought maybe it would be fun (hehe) to make a few small wagers on the horses when I was there. I admit, I know nothing very little about horse racing beyond pick a winner, pick win/place/show, and trifecta.
I've been looking at a couple of the newsletters that I can find.
* Henie - these are relatively straightforward, I think, with the Top Pick and the Second Choice. But is it suggested to only play the "$ Suggested Win Wager" picks?
* Track Phantom - I get the Pick & Value but I don't understand the "Pick 5," "Pick 4," etc. at the top nor the A/B/C/D bets at the bottom of each race.
* Toby Turrell - completely confused here. Looks like each race is listed on the left, with usually 3 horses. Are those his recommendations? Are they in order of preference? Then when he has "Best Bet" (still on the left) is that for that horse or that Exacta? In the middle, there is the Clocker's Corner, where it's rated Super, Very Good, Good: is that rating for this race or the race run prior that is briefed? And I think the picks on the far right are similar to the Track Phantom at the top?
Sorry, I did try to do some research but when I went to look for Toby Turrell information on the newsletter, I was sent to case the race website that is very old; not helpful.

I need to keep it simple. I don't see much (any?) value with a 'racing forum' for someone like me. I'm not going to know Adam from Eve. I just would like a decent publication - or publications - to help lean me towards some bets to place. Going to be small wagers, done just for the fun of watching some races while at the sportsbook watching my football games lose. If you have recommendations on a publication that I can find, that would be most appreciated. If you can help describe some of the questions I have above on the publications I found, that would be great also. If you can direct me towards something to help bring up my racing intelligence without putting hours into it, that would be great.

Please hold the "just send me your money you buffoon" statements. I'm not looking to get rich, I'm just looking for some cheap (I hope) excitement with maybe a couple of winners sprinkled in. And as I said prior, I apologize if all this has already been responded to; just point me in the right directions.

Thanks, and best to all yutes.

HI Bampg

You need to clarify exactly what you want to do?

Bankroll for each day ?
Want to bet small to win big money?
Want to bet one horse per race Win/place?
Are you looking to make exactor bets only ?
Looking to get consistent money on show bets ?
Do you care if you win or loose for the day or you just looking for fun and action?

The above handicappers you mentioned are all losers although once out of every 76 publications they might have a great day.

Be specific and I can lead you to the right place .

Ps : there is a weekend thread that is posted here that a lot of guys post their opinions. It is a live thread so you would have to keep refreshing your phone as they post . So that is an option and it won't cost you anything. Alot of them have sharp selections depending on the weekend. To get an idea just look at the past 4 weekends and see what you're in for .
Michealangelo ususally starts the thread .

IF you want something up front with all the selections at you fingertips before the day starts then you will have to go a different direction.

Anyway let me know and I'll give you the best analysis depending on what you're looking for .

Thank you for the reply! I'll do my best to answer your inquiries:
Exactly what I want to do? Make some small-ish wagers and garner some excitement. If that's on a win or a longshot or exacta or trifecta, I'm indifferent.
Bankroll? I'd be low-balling, let's say $200 or so to lose. Fun & action would be my #1 goal as I'm trying to be realistic in to what a total newbie is hoping to accomplish first go-round.

So, I guess why I didn't initially clarify much is bc I don't really know what I'd be betting; was looking for suggestions. If that's a combo of something like "Bet 10x on this horse to win, 2x on this value horse and 1x on this trifecta" then that wouldn't surprise me. I understand enough that the longer the odds, the likelihood of losing goes up, usually exponentially. But I also think there are to be some opps in, lets call them "parlays," in horse racing that can be better than those in other sports betting. Again, I use that word "think."

I totally appreciate the feedback on those 3 handicappers. Saves me the time of documenting their picks and viewing the results. I started with those 3 bc they show up in the feed that I am usually in (the newsletters). I'll def look for the thread of which you speak. I think my approach will be more of the 'refresh the phone' than 'spend time researching' as I'll have my primary sports to focus on (and prob focus on the gfriend as well).

So, if that's good enough to warrant some recommendations, thank you. I'll be LV first full weekend of Nov. Not even sure if that's a 'big' racing weekend or a 'normal' one. Just thought making some small wagers might create some fun for me and the gang.

Oh boy you have picked the biggest racing weekend of the year to be there. The Race books will be packed!! . Fri and Sat will be Breeders cup racing festival which is like the Super bowl of racing. If you don't like crowds I wouldn't recommend. IF you don't care then its all good but expect large crowds and lineups .

Re; The 3 handicappers above You mentioned I meant they are losers in terms of making money long term. In the short run anyone can have a good day . Also they have knowledge of the game in certain areas and specialize in others . Eg -
Toby is good at spotting horses who work well in the mornings(workouts) , Rob is better southern California circuit where the breeders cup will be held and Track Phantom is an all around great guy and has profound knowledge when it comes to trainers spotting their horses in the right spot. Its like different food shops , all offer a different blend of something.

Like I said the live weekend Live thread will have plenty of options for that weekend I could assure you. 4 -7 handicappers will give their opinions and that's just what you might be looking for from what you have described .

I think that might fit you best

If you have any other questions fire away and good luck

Bentornato = BC Sprint is my early play,

I will bet this all the way up to the weekend of November 1st. It will make or break my Breeders cup. :clover:

Best of Luck to you Sir.

Welcome Bampg, good luck and enjoy your trip to Vegas in next month, I'll be in Vegas in 2 weeks for 4 nights and looking forward to it. As yesyes did say Michaelangelo starts a Live thread on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Michaelangelo, MNeumy, Niko will handicap races from several tracks and post their bets while keeping track of their plays throughout the day to see if they're making a profit or not. Gravy and Aiken usually stop by to post some of their plays too. When I don't have the time to handicap, I'll usually check in on some of their plays to bet on, I met up with Michaelangelo and MNeumy this past summer at Saratoga Race Course to watch some races and have a few beers, they are good solid horseplayers.

Stick to sports
50/50 chance vs. 10-1 or higher odds….

He likes familiar with triples for 50 cent straight play your birthday or wifes
ie: January 25th = 125 all races cost usually $5

key a your top play in a race and use 125 underneath
ie: 4/125 $3 triple

Hope you had some luck following Mitch’s thread last week those guys all showed a profit….
